Cleveland man arrested after armed domestic dispute, standoff

From Local 3 News: UPDATE: A Cleveland man is in custody after an armed domestic dispute that led to him barricading himself inside a home on Linda Drive SE, according to the Cleveland Police Department.

Around 1:00pm on Saturday, February 7, officers say they responded to the scene after a woman called saying she had been in an argument with a man who pulled out a 9mm pistol and threatened to shoot her and himself.

When first responders got on scene, the woman had safely exited the home. Police learned that there were several other guns in the home, and due to the potential risk posed to the public and to their officers, they called in their department's SWAT team to surround the house.

The crisis and hostage negotiation unit also responded. Negotiators talked to the man, now identified as 61-year-old Michael Newman, over the phone around 3:35pm.

After some negotiating, police say the man exited the home "peacefully" around 4:09pm, surrendering without further incident.

Police arrested Newman and charged him with aggravated domestic assault and disorderly conduct. They also issued a mental health detainment.

They urged everyone to avoid the area and allow officers to work.

We reached out to a spokesperson with the department for more details and are waiting to hear back.
