The Cleveland City Council met yesterday.
The city is considering a 12-cent property tax increase as part of the “Pennies for Progress” proposal. Options under this proposal include two new elementary schools, road widening, paving, streetscaping, and a greenway expansion.
The Cleveland Utility Authority presented its proposed FY 2026 budget, projecting $118 million in revenue and $109 million in expenses. The plan includes major investments in electric, water, wastewater, and fiber services.
A finalized rate increase will take effect in October 2025.
Water services are projected at $28 million in revenue with $22 million in expenses, while wastewater is budgeted at $22.2 million in revenue and $18 million in expenses.
Fiber revenue stands at $1.8 million, but expenses are projected at $3 million. Most aerial installations are complete, but underground work continues. The service has only lost one customer so farp and expects full rollout by Q1 of 2026.
Overall staffing will see a 3.5% pay increase, with 243 employees supported.
City offices will be closed on Memorial Day, and the May 26 City Council meeting will be cancelled. The next meeting is scheduled for June 9, when the public hearing and first reading of the FY 2026 budget will also take place.
