From News Channel 9: According to the National World War II Museum, there are a little more than 45,000 WWII veterans still living in this country.
Less than point 5% of those who served in the war are here with us in this area.
One of those veterans, Robert Moore, was recently honored by the VA.
Moore served in Italy during WWII.
Moore told us back in 2017 that he was injured a couple of times, but refused a Purple Heart.
"Now these Germans were good. They were five miles away and they would throw a shell into our kitchen."
We were there when Moore turned 100 back in 2024. And then a few months ago, he turned 101.
The VA presented Moore with the centenarian award this year.
"This is in recognition of your years of life and your years of service. You served 1943 to 1946 combat engineer with the Army under General Patton. You were in Italy when bombs were dropped on Japan. On behalf of the Department of Veteran Affairs, it is my pleasure to send you a note of appreciation for your 100 and first birthday. We honor our veterans, and we want to celebrate your life's accomplishments."
Robert Moore moved to Cleveland in the 70s.
But he met his true love when he was in Italy.
"The train stopped, and then in jumps a little lady, prettiest thing I ever saw."
Her name was Maria. They eventually got married.
Moore brought her back to the States, and they've married for over 60 years.
His children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren are a big, loving family.
