Maryville officer in 'critical condition' after VP Vance motorcade crash

From Local 3 News: UPDATE: The Maryville Police Department has identified the officer who was injured during the motorcade for Vice President JD Vance.

Field Training Officer Justin Brown suffered significant injuries and was taken into surgery Saturday morning at 10:00am, the department said.

Several citizens who witnessed the crash stepped in to administer first aid, helping save the life of the officer, according to Chief Tony Crisp.

"To those individuals whose quick response saved FTO Brown's life last night, we can't thank you enough. You are true heroes," Crisp said.

Crisp thanked everyone for the hundreds of messages, emails, and phone calls as well as the thousands of responses over social media.

"We are grateful for each and every one and appreciate the prayers and support from all over the state," Crisp said. "Our hearts and prayers also go out to the trooper involved in the crash.

We're working to learn more about the trooper's condition.

PREVIOUS STORY: The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) is investigating a serious crash involving a Maryville Police officer and a THP trooper that happened during an executive protection mission for Vice President JD Vance, Knoxville NBC affiliate WBIR reports.

Officials say the collision was at East Lamar Alexander Parkway and Merritt Road in Maryville during an executive protection mission involving multiple law enforcement agencies.

Both the trooper and the Maryville officer were taken by AMR to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for evaluation and treatment. Maryville Police Chief Tony Crisp says the officer is in critical condition.

According to Knoxville NBC affiliate WBIR, the crash occurred the same night agencies were blocking traffic as Air Force Two arrived at McGhee Tyson Airport. Sources confirmed to WBIR that Vice President JD Vance was in East Tennessee on Friday for a private fundraising event. The Tennessee Department of Homeland Security also confirmed the officers were part of the vice president’s motorcade.

“We ask everyone to keep the officer, family, and the medical staff in your prayers,” said Chief Crisp. “All of us at the Maryville Police Department appreciate the concern and outpouring of support from this incredible community.”

Authorities say more information will be released as it becomes available.
