Former corrections officer smuggled contraband into Monroe Co. jail, sheriff says

From Local 3 News: The Monroe County Sheriff's Office has arrested one of their own for introducing contraband into their jail last year.

Sheriff Tommy Jones says they issued a warrant for the arrest of 39-year-old Michael Phillip Zackey, a former corrections officer, this past Monday.

A court document stated he committed the offense in June 2024. Zackey told authorities he had been meeting with somebody to obtain Soboxone and bring it to an inmate for $300.

The drug, a combination of buprenorphine and naloxone, is used to treat opioid addiction, according to Drugs.com.

Based upon Zackey's statements and a subsequent internal investigation, the sheriff's office forwarded the case to the District Attorney's Office for review.

The DA's office told detectives to issue a warrant for the suspect. He turned himself in voluntarily Friday morning.

The agency hired Zackey as a full-time correctional officer on August 14, 2023. He resigned on June 4, 2024.
 
During his brief tenure, they say he received two disciplinary warnings:

• February 22, 2024: Carelessness, violation of safety rules, and violation of department policies or procedures.
  • Result: warning
• March 15, 2024: Violation of safety rules, and violation of department policies and procedures
  • Result: one day suspension

Zackey, who turned himself in, is now out on bond.

Sheriff Jones did not specify the context of these two incidents in his statement, but said his conduct is "deeply disappointing" and does not accurately reflect the values of his agency:
"We will not tolerate this kind of behavior from any member of our staff and will continue to pursue this matter through the proper legal channels."
