The Cleveland City Council met Monday night.
The council proclaimed October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the City of Cleveland.
Mayor Kevin Brooks and members of the council wore pink during the meeting and presented signs and ribbons in support of breast cancer awareness. Representatives from Bradley Medical Center and the American Cancer Society were in attendance for the proclamation.
The council also proclaimed October as National Arts and Humanities Month.
Officer Michael Harris was honored for 33 years of service to the Cleveland Police Department.
The council passed two resolutions declaring his service weapon and bicycle as surplus property, gifting them to him as a token of appreciation. He was also officially allowed to adopt his longtime K-9 partner, Max, who retired after nine years of service.
The council approved $100,000 in funding for a new amphitheater behind the Five Points Museum. Initially contingent on matching funds from Bradley County and the Chamber of Commerce, the final motion passed without that condition after discussion.
The council also approved emergency homeless shelter funding. The Council will present two options to the County Commission to help meet a $125,000 funding need.
A new employee pay plan was approved following extended discussion.
The council adopted an option from the compensation study, raising most city employees to 70% of market rates. The plan also increases starting pay for police officers to $55,000. Longevity and back pay are expected to be distributed in November.
