The Cleveland City Council met yesterday.
City leaders celebrated a state award for the Inman Street revitalization, calling it one of the city’s most complex engineering projects.
The main debate of the meeting centered on a proposed zoning change in the Spring Creek development. The change would have allowed apartments on the ground floor of a planned building, which was against the original requirements for the development. The proposed amendment would have also removed a commercial space requirement and increased the height limit in one section of the development.
Supporters said the update would help complete the long-stalled development and bring more residents to nearby businesses. Opponents argued it would hurt property values, change the neighborhood’s character, and go against the original development plan. After lengthy public comments on both sides, the council voted down the zoning changes in a 4 to 2 vote.
Council members also discussed plans for a new skate park, possibly at Greenway Park, and will seek a BlueCross BlueShield grant to help fund it. In the meantime, City Manager Joe Fivas is looking for an alternative site for a temporary skate park.
