'Horrific' hoarding case in Athens leads to rescue of 40+ dogs

From Local 3 News: Over 40 small-breed dogs in McMinn County have been rescued from a "horrific animal hoarding case," in a home on Haley Street, says Vice Mayor Jordan Curtis.

Friday, Athens Police responded to the home in reference to an animal call they received. The department says officers found numerous dogs outside. When they tried to find the homeowner, they saw even more animals inside.

Officers obtained a warrant, and with the help of two animal shelters, first responders rescued and recovered approximately 44 small dogs. Most of them appeared to be in poor health.

The owner, whose identity has not been publicly released, faces multiple counts of animal cruelty, according to Athens PD.

"I am thankful for the cooperation amongst all the Agencies involved," said Lieutenant Blake Witt. "Their enforcement presence and swift action will hopefully give a voice to the animals that cannot speak to this type of cruelty."

All the dogs are now at the McMinn Regional Humane Society (MRHS) for assessment and treatment.

The shelter says each dog received flea, tick, heartworm preventatives, as well as vaccinations. Every dog had to be bathed multiple times with Dawn dish soap and medicated shampoo.

Many of the animals were covered in fleas and dirt, stuck with matted fur. Some of them, including the seniors, were in poor health.

MRHS says they are over capacity right now, with many dogs sharing kennels with one or two other dogs. The shelter is currently seeking donations to help offset the cost of vetting the neglected animals. They are not currently up for adoption, but the shelter is hopeful to get them back to health as soon as possible.

"Thank you to the City of Athens for moving so quickly to remove these dogs from the home," the shelter said in a Facebook post. "MRHS is hopeful that we can continue to save animal lives while working together! It truly takes a village, and we need the community's help!"

If you or someone you know suspects animal abuse or neglect, you are urged to call your local police department.
