The County Commission met yesterday to discuss key issues, including the budget process and a new urban growth boundary agreement.
The Growth Policy Coordinating Committee has recommended a new boundary and annexation agreement. The new map and agreement will be voted on by local governing bodies, which include Bradley County and the cities of Cleveland and Charleston.
The agreement does not address fire revenue loss or the impact on county fire departments. Mayor Gary Davis told Commissioners that this is an issue that the Commission will have to address outside of the proposed urban growth agreement.
The agreement states that during the 20-year term of the agreement, the cities of Cleveland and Charleston “shall not take any action to annex any property by referendum outside its urban growth boundary." However, Tennessee Code Annotated states a city “may seek to annex property by any available means within its urban growth boundary." Some County Commissioners still voiced their concern with the issue of annexation by referendum.
The Cleveland City Council will vote on the plan on Monday, March 24, the Bradley County Commission will vote on Monday, April 7, and the Charleston City Commission will vote on Tuesday, April 8.
In other business, the commission passed several resolutions, including extending a phone service contract for the Sheriff’s Office, approving a grant easement with TVA, and adopting the 2025 Bradley County Road List.
