The Cleveland City School Board met yesterday.
It was the first meeting for newly elected board member Rene Diamond, who was sworn in by Mayor Kevin Brooks shortly after the November election to represent District 2.
The board unanimously passed the 2026-2027 school calendar. Parents can find the approved calendar on the school system’s website at clevelandschools.org.
Owen Clemons, a track star from Cleveland High School, was honored by the Board. Clemons holds every distance record from the 800 meter to the 5k at Cleveland High School. Clemons also holds two state titles and two national titles. Owens will soon be deciding on which college he will attend.
The board also discussed the possibility of a new 5th and 6th-grade intermediate school that would alleviate some capacity issues at elementary schools and Cleveland Middle School. The new school was a part of the plan voted on by the board in 2022. Director of Schools, Jeff Elliot told board members he is continuing to discuss options with City Council members on the project.
The board also discussed projected growth numbers and the needs of Cleveland High School. The board will meet on December 12th for a board retreat to discuss their strategic plan.
The school board also voted unanimously to approve funding for repaving and work needed for the Arnold School Parking Lot. The repairs will cost approximately $435,000. The board voted to use $350,000 of available sales tax funds to supplement the project.
Director Elliot also reminded board members of the Blue on the Green event coming up on Thursday, December 5th on the Greenway between 5-7 PM. The event will include Santa and opportunities for pictures.
