CPD investigates self-defense homicide after shooting on I-24 east

UPDATE: The Chattanooga Police Department is investigating a homicide that occurred on I-24 eastbound. They say the shooter is claiming self-defense.

When police arrived on scene on Tuesday, November 5, they found a man with life-threatening injuries. He was taken to a hospital where he died.

The shooter had remained at the scene and was arrested.

According to police, the preliminary investigation revealed that a semi-truck had cut in front of a sedan and blocked the car against the concrete construction barrier. The trucker got out of his vehicle and began to assault the driver of the sedan.

The sedan driver shot the trucker and called 911.

Police are asking that anyone with information call the Homicide Tip Line at 423-643-5100.
This is an ongoing investigation.

PREVIOUS STORY: Chattanooga police confirm a portion of I-24 east is closed because of a shooting on Tuesday evening.

The incident happened near Germantown Road at mile marker 183 just before 3:40pm.

Police say at least one person has been shot and the alleged shooter who stayed at the scene has been detained.

A Local 3 producer, who was driving in the area, reported seeing CPD officers performing CPR on an unidentified male as he was lying on the roadway.

TDOT says all eastbound lanes of I-24 around mile marker 183 are closed and traffic is being detoured to Exit 183 at Germantown Road.

It's unclear when the interstate will reopen.
