Hamilton Co. plans audit for two Ooltewah roads after deadly crash

From Local 3 News: A safety audit for Snow Hill Road and Hunter Road is in the works, the Hamilton County Mayor's Office said.

Findings from recent road studies coupled with public safety concerns on the two heavily-trafficked roads have highlighted the need for an audit.

Gabe Lowe, a senior at Ooltewah High School, believes that Snow Hill Road presents too many dangers for new and young drivers.

"As we wrap up the county's first comprehensive growth plan, it’s clear we need to gain a better understanding of the safety deficiencies of both Snow Hill and Hunter Road," said County Mayor Weston Wamp.

This announcement comes a month after the death of a senior at Ooltewah High School in a single-vehicle crash on Snow Hill Road.

After his passing, friends and peers created a petition to add guard rails and other safety features.

Local engineering firm Ragan Smith, who is already partnering with the county on a number of projects, will lead the study, the office said in a press release.

The assessment will take a closer look at problematic areas and generate specific recommendations, as well as cost estimates.

"It's time we take a more detailed look at how we can improve safety on these highly-traveled roads in my district," said District 9 Commissioner Steve Highlander.

"Residents have been raising concerns about Snow Hill and Hunter Roads for years now, and I'm proud to support the mayors initiative addressing those issues making our roadways safer for everyone," said Highlander.

The Hamilton County Commission will vote on funding the safety audit during their meeting next Wednesday, October 16.
