Bradley County Commission work session recap
The County Commission met for a work session yesterday.
Mayor Gary Davis asked Assistant Adam Lewis to give a broadband update during the meeting. Lewis announced that the Broadband Equity Access and Deployment Grant letters of intent are due by October 9th. Volunteer Electric will be applying and the grant is open to other providers as well.
The Mayor also presented a resolution to amend and update the County MS4 Stormwater Management Policy. The policy was first adopted in 2004 and last updated around 2016. The policy has been placed on the next voting agenda.
5th District Commissioner Cindy Slater informed the Commission that the Bradley County School Board voted last week to approve a budget amendment to increase salaries in the school district by 3%. A 2% raise was in the current school budget. The additional 1% came from additional revenue received by the school district and will require no additional funds from the County. Slater placed a motion to approve the amendment on the next voting agenda.
Mike Smith presented the Annual Trustee’s Report. During his report, Smith talked about the partial payment program. The county started the program 14 years ago. Today, there are over 1800 citizens on the program, which accounts for approximately $1.5 million collected in tax revenue.
1724 taxpayers are a part of the tax relief state program. Those taking advantage of the program are mainly elderly, disabled or disabled veterans, or the disabled widow/widower of a veteran.
Smith said the 23/24 interest income was the most received in a fiscal year since he took office in 2006, coming in at just over $5.2 million.
From Sept 2006 to June of 2024, approximately $22 million in total interest has been collected by the County Trustee’s Office.
The next meeting of the Country Commission will be a voting session on Monday, August 19th at Noon.
