Fleischmann Discusses Federal Spending Bill, Medicaid Cuts, and July 4th Deadline
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Chuck Fleischmann joined Mix 104.1 and MixTV.tv Wednesday morning to discuss the high-stakes federal spending bill now under consideration in the U.S. House of Representatives. The bill, which has already passed the Senate with Vice President Kamala Harris casting the tie-breaking vote, has stirred debate among House Republicans due to its $3.3 trillion in deficit spending—$500 billion more than the House version.
Fleischmann, who serves on the House Whip team, confirmed he is a “yes” vote and has informed former President Donald Trump of his support. “My big concern is that we keep taxes low on hardworking Americans,” he said, adding that preserving the American Dream is central to his position. However, he acknowledged internal divisions in the Republican Party and the challenge of uniting enough votes for passage.
The Congressman also responded to concerns about potential Medicaid and SNAP cuts, which could impact up to 250,000 Tennesseans. He argued that while waste and fraud must be addressed, able-bodied Americans should be encouraged to work. “We want these safety nets in place,” he said, “but there’s a lot of spending that is driving our national debt, especially from mandatory programs.”
Fleischmann expects procedural votes to begin Wednesday and believes final passage will only be attempted once leadership is confident it has the necessary votes. Although President Trump has urged for the bill to reach his desk by July 4th, Fleischmann indicated the former president is open to a slight delay if needed.
“I want it done on the fourth,” Fleischmann said. “But if we miss the deadline, he’s amenable to signing it after.”
