From Chattanooga Times Free Press: Tennessee’s textbook commission is preparing to handle new challenges following expanded laws in Tennessee on prohibited materials.

Led by newly appointed executive director Lee Houston, the commission now has dedicated staff and funding to manage book challenges.

Bradley County’s Director of Schools, Dr. Linda Cash, serves as the commission’s chair and said the new dedicated support staff is critical, especially as book complaints work their way through local school boards.

Cash said quote “We expect to start seeing some of those trickle up to us. I think everybody on the commission will take this very seriously and understands the weight and magnitude of any decision.”

Recent state legislation broadens the definition of prohibited materials, including topics related to race, LGBTQ+ issues, and sexual content. The commission’s role extends beyond textbook recommendations to overseeing book challenges and appeals for Tennessee schools.
